Design for usability

Workshop: Designing for usability and user experience in software implementations

Usability and user experience, referring to how usable software products and their user interfaces are to the end-users have become a major concern to product and software companies in the latest years. Typically, usability is related to how easy software is to learn, memorize, and use with satisfaction and without errors, and generally how well the software fits with end-users established understanding and work practices. Emphasizing usability and user experience in organizational settings have been associated with a variety of positive outcomes, such as the reduced need of end-user training, less data entry errors, increased data use, and increased technology acceptance and end-user satisfaction. This is highly relevant in health care and other complex organizational settings, where software such as DHIS2 is part of a complex web of activities and tasks that form the daily work of health workers and other end-users. Sadly, end-users in this context are often left with software that is experienced as a hassle, rather than a useful tool to their work activities, which also have adverse effects on the information system as a whole. Further, the problem may be magnified when systems are based on software packages serving multiple organizations and domains, such as DHIS2, rather than built from scratch to the particular needs within one organization. However, it does not have to be that way; through increased awareness of the phenomenon and the adoption of approaches to address usability, it is possible to build and implement software and user interfaces that fit better with the world of the end-users.

In this workshop, Joe Cooper (DHIS2 core UX designer) and Magnus Li (DHIS2 design lab lead) will present and discuss why usability and user experience is essential, and how it may be addressed during development and implementation of DHIS2. We will also present examples on what we are working with related to DHIS2 core and bundled app design and within various implementation projects. Prominent technical and method-related challenges will also be discussed between the participants of the workshop, hoping to provide interesting learnings for the participants as well as for us as designers of the DHIS2.

Part 1: Introduction to usability, user experience and design.

-       The concepts of usability and user experience and potential benefits of emphasizing it in systems development and implementation.

-       Traditional approaches and techniques to usability design.

-       Usability design during software implementation.

  • Examples from the DHIS2 ‘core’ design.
  • Examples from DHIS2 implementation projects.

-       Topic-oriented discussions.

Part 2: Discussions on approaches, challenges and opportunities within DHIS2 implementations.

Learning outcomes:

-       A general understanding of usability and user experience

-       Basic knowledge about typical approaches and techniques

-       Awareness of challenges related to usability-design during the implementation of generic software (i.e., DHIS2)

Interoperability stories: mHealth4Afrika, Findx
In this session we have two presentations, from mHealth4Afrika and FIND, concerning interoperability.

mHealth4Afrika has co-designed a comprehensive and extensible patient-centric, multi-program custom application on top of DHIS2. It interacts via a WebAPI with mHealth4Afrika data models configured in DHIS2 for each medical program.

FIND is presenting the diagnostics DHIS2 TB showcase, focussed on presenting the ‘art of the possible’ with regards to integrating diagnostic information, into DHIS2, within the context of TB treatment. Data from an advanced TB diagnostic instrument (Cepheid’s GeneXpert) is captured, along with supporting
epidemiological information, and transmitted (via mobile data) to a connectivity layer which translates
and transforms the data, passing the resultant dataset to DHIS2.

Expressions Enhancements for analytics
For the past 25 years DHIS has primarily been designed to calculate output, outcome, and impact indicators. However, to complete the monitoring and evaluation workflow DHIS must also be able to also calculate input and process indicators. More specifically, input and process indicators are essential for bottle neck analysis and root-cause analysis to actually determine where the problems lie and inform the formulation of targeted actions.

This session will present the ongoing work in DHIS 2 to enhance expressions in Indicators, Program Indicators, Validation Rules, and Predictors, describing what has been done already in 2.32, and what will be done next in 2.33 and beyond.

In-country e-learning & digital material

Welcome to in-country e-learning and digital material session. Through this session, we want to to raise awareness on potentials of digital training to support the use of DHIS2. We want to achieve this through:

1. Understanding challenges of capacity building for countries (what are your needs?)

  • Type of content (DHIS2 Spotlights and other digital content)
  • Role of UiO as an enabler for countries
2. Sharing experience & best practices of the use of digital content:
  • Digital content localization (Indonesia)
  • The use SPOC (Small Private Online Course) in Côte d’Ivoire

3. Sharing experience & best practices of introducing and nourishing online workshops and online courses throughout an institution (PEPFAR)
4. Discussing on the balance between global resources and localized content

At the end of the session, the participants and the facilitators will have been exposed to use cases to initiate a reflection on how digital content could leverage their current training strategy.

DHIS2 for UHC
openIMIS is an open source platform which helps to manage health financing processes as support to on of the major pillars in Universal Health Coverage (UHC). openIMIS seamlessly integrates the key stake holders in theses processes: payers, beneficiaries and providers. In a joint effort, HISP India and the openIMIS Initiative are working on a business intelligence (BI) for UHC reporting using DHIS2 as a platform, extracting openIMIS data through HL7 FHIR APIs.
The session will start with an introduction to the openIMIS Initiative and software. Findings from the requirements analysis for a reporting dashboard will be presented and discussed. The audience is also invited to discuss architecture options for DHIS2 as a BI platform for UHC.

Introduction to the DHIS2 App Platform
The Application Platform for DHIS 2 is a robust and accessible foundation for all DHIS 2 applications - both core applications developed by UiO and third-party applications developed by the community.

The goals of this project are:
1. To minimize the customization and configuration required to develop simple applications on the DHIS 2 platform
2. To standardize the look, feel, and behavior of every app in DHIS2
3. To provide simple, powerful building block which make it possible to construct complex applications

The principles which guide our development of this platform are minimalism, inversion of control, and centralized automation.

Join me as I introduce the platform and its principles, discuss the step-function benefit for users and implementers of DHIS 2, and dive deeper into the implications for developers of both core and custom DHIS 2 applications.

Digital storytelling
Digital storytelling is about communicating your story in a personal and compelling way through visual aids. With free tools such as https://shotcut.org/download/ you can easily create 3-4 min videos based on your pictures, videos and a recorded narrative.

The DHIS2 community is abundant with stories from implementations, research projects and development we should share with the community and in this session we will show you how!

We will show some examples of digital stories, a walkthrough of the tool and how we made our first story.

Strengthening Date Use in DHIS 2: Bottleneck Analysis dashboards
Bottleneck analysis is a systematic way of analyzing health systems constraints that inhibit the coverage and quality of health interventions. It has been used by district management teams to support annual health sector planning. For a given health intervention, bottlenecks in the operation of the service are identified, constraining factors responsible for such bottlenecks are analyzed, and local solutions for improving services are developed.

In our session, we will provide an overview of participatory design in the development of a bottleneck analysis application for DHIS2 to support enhanced use of routine data for subnational performance monitoring and planning, do a live demo of the application, and discuss the future app development roadmap, plans country implementations and opportunities for collaboration.

Below is an outline of the session:
  • Introductions and Overview
  • Bottleneck Analysis Application Demonstration
  • App Development and In Country Implementation Roadmap
  • Commentary: Bottleneck Analysis for Health System Strengthening
  • Discussion: Q&A , possible synergies and future collaborations

PEPFAR/MoH data alignment
The PEPFAR/MoH Data Alignment Activity demonstrates a clear use case in support of the data exchange and interoperability value proposition to move PEPFAR ever closer to deriving data directly from MoH systems thereby reducing duplicative data entry and doing away with parallel reporting structures.
Our presentation will focus on (1) describing the data exchange and interoperability technology components integrated with DATIM/DHIS2 to develop the end-to end reusable PEPFAR/MoH Data Alignment technology stack (2) resulting data analysis of the 23 priority countries’ side-by-side results comparison for 5 indicators and data discordances between PEPFAR and MoH Results (3) how embedding data Exchange & interoperability into PEPFAR Systems is foundational for maintaining ongoing PEPFAR/MoH as a key to meeting program data needs in support of PEPFAR’s strategy for accelerating HIV/AIDS epidemic control and (4) how PEPFAR is leveraging existing products and toolsets instead of re-inventing the wheel within the data exchange and interoperability domain to continue to meet emerging programmatic needs.

HISP Research: stories from the field
A key approach in the HISP network is to stay close to the user and innovate based on understanding the situation on the ground. In this session you will hear stories from ongoing research projects in the field. We will also discuss our common vocabulary to improve HMIS implemetations.

Professor Kristin Braa and professor Jørn Braa will give an introduction about the importance of research in the success of DHIS2 over the past 20 years.
Jørn Braa will talk about ongoing research on data use practices in east Africa. He has recently visited a range of countries in the region, together with local HISP-groups, to better understand how people analyse data and make descicions based on these data.

Researcher Arunima Mukherjee and research and evaluation coordinator Anne Asmyr Thorseng will talk about an ongoing study in Odisha, a state on the Indian east coast that has used DHIS2 for over 10 years. The focus of this study is to understand the drivers and limitations for institutionalisation, governance, capacity strengthening and sustainability.

We welcome discussions on relevant research topics and how we as a community best can understand the challenges on the ground to improve both the platform and implementations.

Complex Data Modelling
This session describes how PEPFAR models its data in DHIS 2. PEPFAR is the U.S. Government's HIV/AIDS relief program in 58 countries. This session includes (1) how PEPFAR funding mechanisms are modeled in DHIS2 (using attribute options, and how these compare and contrast with disaggregation category options), (2) how agencies and partners are modeled (using category option groups and group sets, and how these can be used in various ways for modelling additional, user-defined dimensions in DHIS 2), and (3) how data approval is modeled (including how category option group sets function in data approval levels.)

This session should be of interest to those wanting to know how to model medium to complex systems in DHIS 2.

Island trip to Hovedøya
The annual DHIS2 community island trip! Hangout out in our beautiful fjord, join the prestigious football match, swim in the fjord, pick mussels or just relax.

We will leave together from the University venue to the Island after lunch. So bring your fotball or swim suit with you in the morning!

We will take the public ferry to Hovedøya, you can use your public transport pass, same as bus, tram, metro.

The ferry leaves from the docks in front of the City Hall, exact location here:
https://maps.app.goo.gl/W9T7SejTv91vKrTd6

Note that this is NOT the same ferry terminal as last year.

Ferries B2 and B3 both go to Hovedøya, a ride that takes only 8 minutes.

The ferry leaves 15 and 45 min past every hour.
Given our group size we need to spread out a bit, so we can aim for 14:45,15:15 and 15:45.

Take the metro towards city center and get off at Nationaltheatret station. From there it is a 5 min walk to the ferry terminal.

The ferry returns back to the city at 19 and 49 every hour until the last ferry at 23:49.

Our base on the Island will be 10 min walk from the ferry terminal. Exact location here:
59°53'36.1"N 10°43'39.5"Ehttps://goo.gl/maps/yiGGPuf2omG9T3ds9

The weather forecast looks pretty good, mostly sunny. But it may get a bit windy, and we may get a light shower in the evening. So good to bring a jacket.

We will bring drinks and some light barbecue (sausages) to the island. In order to transport everything out there we need help from all of you! In our community spirit we will all carry one plastic bag each. Pick up the plastic bag after lunch and please return it to the UiO staff (look for signs) when you get to the HISP Beach on the island.

Look forward to seeing you all at the Island and to round off the conference in a truly Oslo-way out in the fjord.
